At Home in the Mountains

At Home in the Mountains Amy Corcell is a flea market enthusiast, a Craigslist connoisseur plus a discount-website devotee. Decorating her house in the little mountain town of Cashiers, N.C., became a match to the stay-at-home mom. "What economical piece can I evaluate and what could I do with it to make it look fantastic?" says Amy.



Comfortable Style for Your Family Her friends, artists Hooper Patterson and Ann White Schutte, helped by scouring everything from country antiques fairs to big-name mall shops for Amy, her husband, Mike, and their three kids. "We landed on the perfect mixture of comfortable, colorful and totally one-of-a-kind."



Kitchen The kitchen's star is its island, which can seat up to six. A carpenter made the island shirt from reclaimed barn wood, then painted it in a high-gloss grey to mimic the granite counters. Where Everyone Meets Harrison, 5, Hayes, 4, and Camille, two, consume all their meals. "When our friends come over, that's where we wind up," says Amy. The high-back steel stools are from overstock.com ($170 for a pair of two).

Breakfast Nook A Craigslist hunt led to the bamboo-style dining set already painted black and white.



Stylish Seating Amy had this green cloth (Spicer in Celery, $40 a yard, lacefielddesigns.com) made into cushion covers and chair seats.



Unexpected Lighting The paper-mache pendant lighting over the kitchen table is from West Elm.



Living Room The white linen Robin Bruce couch is "so comfortable, and it has a 10-year warranty on stains," says Amy. Hooper and Ann brought in color and pattern with a leopard-print ottoman and coral armchairs. To maintain the built-in cubbies from appearing cluttered with attachments, Amy stuffed some with only one thing each.



Side Table A flea market steal at $10, this 1960s wood side table has a hammered copper top.



Additional Seating The oak seats by furniture company Gabby were reupholstered in coral velvet. Zincdoor.com has similar styles. Amy scooped this up kid-sized chair for only $4 on eBay.



Great Find The upholstery was in good shape, so Amy kept the armchair, which cost about $500 at an auction, as is.



Boys' Bedroom "We used to live in London, so that motivated the design," says Amy. She chose a navy blue and red color scheme and added a few British accents. The striped wool rug is from HomeGoods, and the walnut dresser is a flea market find and does double duty as a nightstand.



Bedding The Union Jack pillow is out of Etsy. Behind it's a flea market grain sofa that Amy full of a cushion. The headboards are from Target and were significantly less than $100 each. Pine Cone Hill reddish cotton throws liven up the L.L.Bean striped duvets.



Master Bedroom Amy went all out with white and blue to create her bedroom feel serene. She layered the space using a mix of patterns, including a diamond-print upholstered X-bench, coral-patterned drapes decorating the mattress and an oversize quatrefoil rug. The ceiling has been painted Kentucky Haze from Benjamin Moore.



Vanity Area Across in the Noir mattress sits a classic Goal desk-turned-vanity, draped in much more blue and white, a lattice-print fabric from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft. The focus remains on the table's fun cloth, as a result of some Lucite seat from overstock.com.



Canopy Fabric The canopy is heavy cotton out of Artee Fabrics and Home, a local fabric store. Locate a similar look at joann.com.



Mixing Patterns Fantastic place for the X-bench! This patterned one cost $80 at HomeGoods. Hooper and Ann discovered that this big, bold wool carpet in shadesoflight.com.



Sitting Space The room had solid pieces, therefore Hooper and Ann snagged these linen seats for about $350 each from overstock.com.



Playroom "The kids like to paint and draw, so we needed that room to be bright and fun," says Amy. The table was created out of a wood tabletop the Corcells already needed -- it's screwed to fence posts which were cut to kiddie height. The Ektorp couch from IKEA has easy-to-remove cotton slipcovers which may go in the wash.

Flower-Box Inspiration

Flower-Box Inspiration A forest-green mattress crown is the perfect addition to this pastel-pink girls' bedroom. "This bed crown was inspired by my love of window boxes, and by turning down one upside I found it created a great form for a bed crown," Shoshana Gosselin says. Get the appearance by covering a window box in cloth lining, attaching fabric with hot paste and including a fun cloth to the base for embellishment. Tip: To hide a seam and then cover some defects, use fabric ribbon or bows as a colorful (and practical) adornment.



Fit for Royalty No princess is complete with no crown. HGTV fan ajerde transformed this 3-year-old's bedroom into an elegant yet shabby chic retreat. A magical daybed boasts an eye catching gold mattress crown with cream-colored fabric, a striking complement to striped pink partitions.



Elegant Neutrality This monochrome, cream bedroom carries adult elegance to a completely different level. Designer Brooke Giannetti desired to add a touch of drama into the tone-on-tone cream palette throughout the bed crown without leaving the general color scheme. "We added interest by using distinct patterns and combining silk damask with velvet," she states. "Large tassel tiebacks and a pretty rope trim add amazing detailing."



Simple Addition "A fabric mattress crown is an cheap and chic stand-in for a traditional headboard," Marian Parsons says. She used neutral colors and tasteful, European-inspired toile fabric for her cornice-board creation. This type of bed crown is not difficult to make and can dress up any bedroom. "One could be made by simply stapling gathered fabric to a plank and directing it to the ceiling," Marian says.



Antique Retreat The outdoor-inspired and cottage-style dwelling of HGTV Dream Home 2006 was extended to the bedroom package. Designer Linda Woodrum gave rustic, wrought iron beds a dreamy touch with matching cornice boards and sheer white cloth.



Custom-Made Canopy Christie Kauffman wished to produce the look of a duvet bed while using the framework of a twin-sized, girls' daybed. She dressed up a walnut cornice with white paint, trim and moldings for a more feminine and custom-made look. She stapled absolute, white fabric to the rear side of the box and then attached it to the wall. The end result is a crisp accession to the pink walls and a gentle, dramatic signature.



Youthful Elegance This classic and ageless bedroom was created for little girls but decorated with mature, adult style. A cream along with Antique furnishings and lavender colour scheme keep the room impartial and smooth but with plenty of femininity for growing girls. Pretty in Pink Even a simple cloth bed crown can transform a little girls' bedroom. Shoshana Gosselin covered a cornice board in cotton cloth, complete with pink welting. She added blossom and floral draperies with royal blue ribbon tiebacks to match the lively look of this bedroom.



Sweet Greens Pink and green hues are an eye-catching colour duo and increase the whimsical feel of the girls' bedroom. HGTV fan sljdesign used interchangeable plaid and green cloth for the elegant bed crown, creating a bold focal point for the space.



Victorian Surroundings A vibrant and flowing cloth bed crown adds yet another lively element to this whimsical bedroom. Designer Audrey Brandt created this fairy-tale area for her daughter in their 19th-century Victorian residence. "I love the idea of utilizing a crown canopy effect over her daybed, which draws your eyes up to the detail around the crown molding," she says. "It provides the room a focal point when you walk into the space and creates play."



Toile de Jouy HGTV fan toogerbug used cream and black toile to make a nation retreat. The toile bed crown coordinates nicely with the matching bedding and background without sacrificing its striking appeal.



Playful Pastels Shabby chic decor is acceptable for any age, however the collection of pale hues and small girl decor make this space a innocent retreat for the youthful and young at heart. "We found the metal work used for the canopy at a local boutique and had it retrofitted to be hung on the wall," HGTV fan JosephDavidInteriors says.
